History and characteristics of the A-37B Dragonfly aircraft:
The Cessna A-37 Dragonfly, also known as the "Super Tweet," is a light jet aircraft designed for attack missions, developed and produced by the American company Cessna. This aircraft was developed in response to the demand for new aircraft to combat insurgency (COIN), which were to replace aging models such as the Douglas A-1 Skyraider. The A-37B was developed based on the T-37 Tweet training aircraft. As a result of modifications, the aircraft gained weight and engine power, allowing it to carry more armament and extend flight time. The first A-37A units were sent to Vietnam as part of the "Combat Dragon" program in 1967. These aircraft performed various missions, including air support, helicopter escort, FAC (Forward Air Control) missions, and night interdictions. In response to operational needs, the USAF ordered an improved version, the A-37B, which was more durable and could carry larger payloads. These aircraft were widely used in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, primarily to support U.S. ground forces. After the conflict ended, A-37Bs were transferred to National Guard and Air Force Reserve units, where they served as FAC aircraft. Over time, they were replaced by more advanced A-10 Thunderbolt IIs.
International use:
A-37Bs were exported to many Latin American countries, where they were used in internal conflicts and anti-drug operations. These aircraft were valued for their simplicity, low operating costs, and effectiveness in counterinsurgency operations. During the civil war in El Salvador, A-37Bs were used to bomb rebel bases and support government forces.
