History and significance of the Boeing 737: The Boeing 737 is an American narrow-body aircraft produced by Boeing at its Renton, Washington factory. It was designed as a complement to the Boeing 727 for short and less congested routes. This aircraft retained the fuselage width of the Boeing 707 and a six-abreast seating configuration but was equipped with two Pratt and Whitney JT8D low-bypass turbofan engines.
The first flight of the Boeing 737-100 took place in April 1967, and it entered service in February 1968 with Lufthansa. Since then, the aircraft has gone through four generations, offering various variants for 85 to 215 passengers. Military and government versions of the Boeing 737 are used by many countries around the world, including Colombia and Indonesia.
Significance in aviation: The Boeing 737 was the best-selling commercial aircraft until October 2019, when it was surpassed by the Airbus A320 family. However, it still holds the record for the number of deliveries. By July 2025, 17,037 units had been ordered, and 12,171 had been delivered. This aircraft was a major competitor to the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and its derivatives MD-80/MD-90.
Military applications: Many countries use the Boeing 737 in passenger, BBJ (Boeing Business Jet), and cargo versions for government or military applications. Among the users are countries such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Poland, the United States, and many others.
