USS Enterprise (CVN-65): USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth ship in the history of the U.S. Navy to bear this name. Also known as "Big E," Enterprise was the longest warship ever built, measuring 342 meters in length. Its displacement was 93,284 long tons, making it the third largest aircraft carrier after the Nimitz and Gerald R. Ford classes.
Enterprise was the only aircraft carrier equipped with eight nuclear reactors, which was a unique solution compared to other vessels that typically had two reactors. This ship was also the only aircraft carrier with four rudders, giving it a more cruiser-like hull shape.
Armament and equipment: Initially, Enterprise was launched without the planned RIM-2 Terrier missile launchers due to high construction costs. In later years, it was equipped with the Basic Point Defense Missile System (BPDMS) with Sea Sparrow missile launchers. Additional upgrades included the installation of two NATO Sea Sparrow (NSSM) launchers and three Mk 15 Phalanx CIWS guns. Later on, one of the CIWS guns was removed, and two RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile launchers were added.
Radar system: Enterprise was equipped with an advanced SCANFAR radar system, consisting of AN/SPS-32 and AN/SPS-33 radars, which were capable of tracking multiple aerial targets simultaneously. Although innovative, this system required constant repairs and was not continued in subsequent classes of ships due to issues with the electric beam control mechanism.
History and significance: USS Enterprise served in the U.S. Navy for over 55 years, from its commissioning in 1961 until its decommissioning in 2012. It was the third oldest ship in active service at the time of deactivation, after USS Constitution and USS Pueblo. Ultimately, it was stricken from the naval register in 2017. Its legacy is continued by the new Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN-80).
