History and significance of the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch:
The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, also known as the "Stork," is a German liaison aircraft designed and produced by Fieseler. Its distinctive name comes from the long legs of the main landing gear, which resembled the legs of a stork. This aircraft was developed in the mid-1930s at the request of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) as a cheap and easy-to-build aircraft for liaison tasks, cooperation with the army, and medical evacuation.
The Fi 156 gained recognition for its excellent STOL characteristics and a low stall speed of just 50 km/h. Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 2900 units of various models were produced, with the most popular being the Fi 156C. This aircraft quickly gained popularity in export markets and was widely used by various countries.
During World War II, the Fi 156 was extensively operated by the Luftwaffe, mainly in the role of reconnaissance aircraft, as well as a military transport. German aircraft participated in operations on the Eastern and Western fronts, in North Africa, and even in the Arctic. One of the most famous episodes involving the Storch was Operation Eiche in September 1943, when this aircraft played a crucial role in the rescue of the deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from the mountain peak of Gran Sasso.
Design and technical features:
The Fi 156 Storch was a high-wing monoplane that stood out for its exceptional STOL capabilities. The aircraft had the ability to fold its wings along the fuselage, which facilitated its transport. The long legs of the main landing gear were equipped with oil and spring shock absorbers, allowing for landing on uneven surfaces.
The cockpit was spacious and glazed, providing excellent visibility. The aircraft's structure consisted of steel tubes covered with fabric, while the tail and wings were made of wood. The aircraft could be operated by a three-person crew.
Post-war use:
After the end of World War II, production of the Fi 156 continued in other countries, such as France, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and the Soviet Union. This aircraft was used for both military and civilian purposes, including agricultural spraying. To this day, many examples of the Fi 156 are fully operational and can be seen at airshows around the world.
