History and usage:

The 155mm field howitzer wz.1917 Schneider, also known as Canon de 155 C mle 1917 Schneider, was designed by the French company Schneider in 1917. It was an improved version of the earlier wz. 1909 model with a caliber of 152 mm. Due to its modern design and effectiveness, this howitzer was widely used by many armies around the world, including the Polish Army, until the 1980s.

The mle 1917 howitzer became one of the main artillery pieces of the French army during World War I. After its conclusion, in 1918, it was not withdrawn and continued to be a basic equipment of the French heavy artillery. At the time of the German attack on France in 1940, about 2000 of these guns were in the front line. During World War I, the United States purchased the mle 1917 howitzers from France, introducing them into service as M1917 and M1917A1. After the war, these howitzers remained in use until new models were introduced in 1941.

The first mle 1917 howitzers arrived in Poland in 1919 with Haller's Army. During the interwar period, they were the basic equipment of the Polish heavy artillery. At the outbreak of World War II, Poland had 341 howitzers of this type. During the September campaign, they were used for harassment fire and as anti-tank weapons.

The mle 1917 howitzer was also used by the armies of many other countries, including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, Greece, Spain, Yugoslavia, Germany, Russia, Romania, Serbia, and Italy. In Finland, some variants of this gun were in use until the 1980s.
