History and background of the Leclerc tank: The Leclerc tank was developed and produced by KNDS France and named after Marshal Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, commander of the Free French Forces during World War II. Production of the tank began in 1991, and it entered service in France in 1992, replacing the AMX-30 as the country's main armored platform.
