History and development of the Renault R40:
The Renault R40 was an evolution of the earlier R35 model, which was one of the main infantry tanks used by France in the 1930s. In response to the need for improved mobility and combat effectiveness, a number of modifications were introduced, resulting in the creation of the R40. The most significant change was the implementation of a new suspension system developed by AMX, which improved the tank's off-road capabilities and allowed it to climb steep inclines. Production began in May 1940, and by June of that year, approximately 130-145 hulls had been produced, some of which had not yet been fitted with turrets.
The Renault R40 was used in the French campaign in 1940. Two new tank battalions, the 40e and 48e Bataillion de Chars de Combat, were partially equipped with R40s and assigned to the 2e DCR as an emergency measure. These tanks were also used by the Polish 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade formed in France.
