History of the 7.5 cm le.IG 18 gun: The 7.5 cm le.IG 18 infantry gun was developed by Rheinmetall in 1927 as support for the German infantry. It was a lightweight gun that could be easily transported and quickly deployed on the battlefield. Equipped with an armored shield, it provided protection for the crew during fire.
This gun had several variants, including the mountain version 7.5 cm le.GebIG 18, which could be broken down into six to ten packages, facilitating its transport in difficult terrain. This variant was assigned two per each mountain battalion. There was also an airborne version, the 7.5 cm le.IG 18F, produced in 1939, which could be broken down into four loads of 140 kg each. This version had smaller wheels and did not have a protective shield.
Despite attempts to introduce a new infantry support gun, the 7.5 cm Infanteriegeschütz L/13, which could be broken down into four to six loads, the German army decided to stick with the proven model le.IG 18, believing that the new design did not provide sufficient benefits.
Use after World War II: After the end of World War II, the le.IG 18 gun found its way into the arsenals of other countries. In 1953, under the presidency of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán, Guatemala purchased several batteries of these guns from Czechoslovakia. They remained in service until 1984, which attests to their durability and reliability.
