History and technical background:
The Schnellboot was a fast torpedo boat used by the Kriegsmarine, the navy of the Third Reich, during World War II. The S-100 class, developed based on earlier S-38b models, was one of the most advanced and effective units of its kind. Due to its design, these boats were extremely seaworthy, well-armed, and capable of reaching speeds of up to 43.5 knots (approximately 80.6 km/h), with the ability to temporarily accelerate to 48 knots (approximately 89 km/h).
The S-100s were equipped with two 53.3 cm torpedo launchers mounted at the bow and various anti-aircraft armaments, including 20 mm and 37 mm guns. Their construction, based on a hull made of wooden planks on lightweight metal alloy feet, provided not only lightness but also durability and excellent seaworthiness.
Operations and historical significance:
Schnellboots were primarily used for patrolling the Baltic Sea and the English Channel, where they were tasked with intercepting Allied ships. Their presence was particularly felt during the D-Day operations when boats from the 9th flotilla were the first to respond to the Allied invasion, attacking the invasion fleet. During the war, Schnellboots sank 101 merchant ships with a total displacement of 214,728 tons and damaged many other vessels.
After the war, some of these boats continued to be used by European countries until the early 1950s. The crews of Schnellboots were awarded for their achievements, receiving, among others, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and the German Cross in Gold.
