Historical background: In the summer of 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, during which Germany supported the nationalists by secretly supplying them with weapons. As part of this support, between the autumn of 1936 and the spring of 1937, five Hs 123A aircraft were sent to Spain for combat trials. These aircraft were assigned to the experimental unit VJ/88, which was part of the German Legion Condor, operating various types of aircraft.

Although the Hs 123A were officially classified as fighters, their main task was ground attacks. The first combat operations were carried out during the fighting for Málaga. As close support aircraft, the Hs 123A demonstrated excellent effectiveness, high survivability, and the ability to operate from short, unprepared airstrips. These aircraft also featured an excellent balance between speed and maneuverability – in case of damage, the Hs 123A could escape from enemy fighters by performing steep dives.

Of the five aircraft sent to Spain, three were lost in action, and the remaining two were later handed over to the nationalist air forces. In 1939, Spain ordered an additional twelve Hs 123 aircraft, which remained in service until 1949.
