Historical background:

The Royal Italian Army was nominally commanded by King Victor Emmanuel III, but in practice, most military duties were taken over by Prime Minister Benito Mussolini. The army was organized into army groups that covered various geographical regions, such as the Army Group West, Army Group Albania, Army Group East Africa, Army Group Aegean, and Army Group Libya.

The basic organizational unit was the division, which after reorganization in 1938 became a "binary division," consisting of two infantry regiments, an artillery regiment, a mortar battalion, an engineering battalion, and a company of pack howitzers. Italian infantry divisions were often under-equipped, and many of their tanks were light "tankettes" instead of fully functional tanks.

During World War II, the Royal Italian Army participated in many campaigns, including the invasion of France, Egypt, Greece, and campaigns in North Africa and the Balkans. Italian soldiers also fought on the Eastern Front, supporting the German offensive against the Soviet Union.

After the armistice in Cassibile in September 1943, the Royal Italian Army switched sides to the Allies, forming the Italian Co-Belligerent Forces. At this time, Mussolini created a new fascist army in the Italian Social Republic, which fought on the Axis side.
