History and historical background:

The J-8 Gladiator, also known as the Gloster Gladiator, is a fighter aircraft that played a significant role in the history of Swedish military aviation. In 1936, in the face of rising tensions in Europe, the Swedish Ministry of Defense decided to reorganize the air force, which included the establishment of a new fighter wing and four new bomber wings. After a selection process, the Gloster Gladiator was deemed the most suitable aircraft to meet the requirements of the Swedish armed forces, resulting in an order for 55 machines.

The first Gloster Gladiator was delivered to the Swedish Air Force on April 15, 1937, and received the local designation Jaktplan 8 (J8). Initially, several Swedish Gladiators were equipped with a Fairey three-blade propeller, but later it was decided to revert to the earlier two-blade wooden propeller with a fixed pitch. The first 37 aircraft were built to the Gladiator Mk.I standard with a Bristol Mercury VIS2 engine rated at 645 HP, while the last batch of 18 aircraft conformed to the Gladiator Mk.II standard with a Bristol Mercury VIII engine rated at 840 HP. The first batch was known as J8, and the second as J8A.

Although the Gloster Gladiator was a modern aircraft at the time of its debut in 1934, it quickly became outdated compared to machines such as the German Bf 109, British Hawker Hurricane, or American P-35. As a result, the Swedish Air Force was urgently seeking more modern types of aircraft.

International events led to the Swedish J8 debuting in combat in 1939, although not under Swedish colors. Following the Soviet invasion of Finland on November 30, 1939, many countries offered military support to Finland, including neighboring Sweden, which formed a volunteer squadron Flygflottilj 19 that fought under Finnish colors. The F19 wing consisted of 12 Gladiator J8A aircraft.

In early January 1940, the F19 wing began combat operations on January 12, 1940, conducting raids on Soviet military concentrations and air bases near Märkäjärvi, Salmijärvi, and Salla. While the Hawker Hart bombers struggled in engagements with the enemy, the Gloster Gladiators demonstrated significantly better effectiveness during their mission.
