Kilo class submarine type 636: Project 877, known by its NATO code as Kilo, is a series of Soviet diesel-electric submarines developed by the Rubin design bureau. The variant intended for the Russian Navy, designated as project 636 (Improved Kilo), features enhanced technical and operational parameters.
History and significance: Kilo class submarines were built in three shipyards: Komsomolsk in the Far East, Sudomech in Leningrad, and Krasnoje Sormowo in Gorky. The first prototype, B-248, entered service in the Soviet Navy on September 12, 1980. By the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a total of 22 units had been built, and after 1997, another 20 submarines of project 636 were produced for various countries, including Algeria, China, Russia, and Vietnam.
These submarines were intended for the fleets of the Warsaw Pact and other navies, making them a significant element of Cold War maritime history. The 636 version, significantly improved compared to previous models, was originally intended solely for the Soviet Navy but became available for export starting in 1993.
