History and significance of the M1A1 Abrams:
The M1 Abrams is a third-generation American main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense, now known as General Dynamics Land Systems. Named after General Creighton Abrams, this tank was created with modern land warfare in mind. It is one of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing nearly 66.8 metric tons.
The M1 Abrams introduced many modern technologies to the U.S. armored forces, such as a multi-fuel turbine engine, advanced Chobham composite armor, a computer fire control system, separate ammunition storage in a blast-proof compartment, and NBC protection for crew safety. Early models were armed with a 105 mm M68 gun, while later versions, such as the M1A1, were equipped with a Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44 gun, designated as the M256.
The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980 and became the main battle tank of the United States Army. It has been used in many conflicts, including the Gulf War, the war in Afghanistan, and the war in Iraq. Between 2010 and 2012, the United States supplied 140 refurbished M1A1 Abrams tanks to Iraq. In 2014, these tanks participated in battles against the Islamic State, and by the end of the year, the Iraqi army had only 40 operational Abrams. In 2017, Abrams tanks were used by Iraqi security forces and Popular Mobilization Forces in clashes with the Peshmerga in the city of Altun Kupri.
