Plastic model airplane for assembly: Me262A-1/2 Last Ace 1:72 Academy 12542
We present a plastic model for assembly in 1:72 scale, which replicates the legendary German fighter aircraft Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe. This model is a great opportunity for aviation history enthusiasts and modelers to recreate one of the most innovative aircraft of World War II.
Model specifications:
- Scale: 1:72
- Manufacturer: Academy
- Catalog number: 12542
Historical characteristics:
The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe was the world's first jet-powered fighter to be used in combat. Its development began in the 1930s, and it entered service in 1944. This aircraft was used in various roles, including as a bomber (A-2a), interceptor (A-1a), and night fighter (B-1a/U1).
The Me 262 was known for its impressive performance, which surpassed the capabilities of conventional propeller-driven fighters of the time. With the use of Junkers Jumo 004 B 1 jet engines and swept wings, the Me 262 could reach speeds of around 800 km/h. It was the first aircraft to signal the end of the propeller-driven aircraft era and the beginning of the jet age.
History and development:
Work on the Me 262 began in 1938, and the first prototype took to the air in 1941 with a conventional piston engine. It was not until 1942 that flights were conducted with the intended jet engines. Serial production began in 1944, but due to material shortages and strategic decisions, many aircraft were destroyed on the ground during bombings.
Despite its limited impact on the course of the war, the Me 262 achieved around 900 kills with its own losses amounting to 100 aircraft. Its advanced design and performance made it one of the most recognizable aircraft of World War II.
Combat use:
The Me 262 was primarily used as an interceptor against Allied bombers. Thanks to its speed and armament of four 30 mm MK 108 cannons, it had the capability to effectively attack bomber formations. However, due to the small number of aircraft produced, its impact on military operations was limited.
In March 1945, during one of the missions, 37 Me 262 aircraft intercepted a bombing raid consisting of 1221 bombers and 632 escort fighters, shooting down 12 bombers and one enemy fighter. Despite an excellent kill-to-loss ratio, the number of enemy aircraft destroyed was insufficient to significantly influence the course of the war.
Assembly and painting kit. Does not include paints or glue. Assembly requires separately sold modeling tools (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g., Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
