About the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt:
The P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug," was one of the largest single-engine fighters of World War II. A total of 15,683 units were produced, making it the most numerous fighter in U.S. history. This aircraft was used on many fronts, including Europe, Africa, the Far East, and the Pacific. The P-47 completed 546,000 combat sorties, dropped 132,482 tons of bombs, and fired 59,567 rockets, destroying over 11,874 enemy aircraft.
The P-47 project began in 1939 at Republic Aviation, with Alexander Kartveli as the chief designer. Initially, it was designed as a lightweight high-altitude fighter, but wartime requirements forced the creation of a new, more advanced machine. The P-47 was equipped with a powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Twin Wasp engine, allowing it to achieve impressive speeds at high altitudes.
The P-47D version was the main production variant, with 12,602 units produced. This version was known for its strong armor, high firepower, and self-sealing fuel tanks. The D-11-RE version, which can be built from this kit, was equipped with the R-2800-63 engine with an automatic water injection system, increasing its power.
The P-47 was valued for its damage resistance, strong armament, and comfortable cockpit. It was one of the best high-altitude fighters of World War II, surpassing many German aircraft. With additional fuel tanks, it could escort bombers deep into enemy territory.
