History and performance of the P-47D Thunderbolt: The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug," was one of the main fighters used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. Produced from 1941 to 1945, the P-47 was used in both Europe and the Pacific. Its primary mission was to escort bombers and attack ground targets, making it a versatile tool in the Allies' arsenal.
The P-47 was powered by a powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, which provided excellent performance at high altitudes. With its advanced turbocharger, the aircraft could reach speeds of up to 644 km/h at an altitude of 7620 m. Its construction was exceptionally durable, allowing it to return to base even with serious combat damage.
The P-47D version was the most widely produced variant of this fighter, with a total of 12,602 units produced. Modifications included reinforced cockpit armor, improved engine cooling, and the ability to carry more armament and fuel. Thanks to these changes, the P-47D became an even more effective tool in combat.
