The CH-47 Chinook is a multi-purpose, twin-engine, twin-rotor, heavy lift helicopter manufactured by the US company Boeing.

The two counter-rotating rotors eliminate the need for a vertical tail rotor, allowing all power to be used for vertical climb, and allow speeds of 278 km/h to be achieved. The main function of this helicopter is to transport troops and equipment. Chinook helicopters are used in 16 countries. The largest users of Chinook are the US Army and the British RAF. In addition, they are on the equipment of the armies of countries such as Egypt, Australia, Greece, Canada, Italy, Israel, Japan and Thailand.

The CH-47 Chinook is the successor to the Boeing CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter and features a very similar flying banana silhouette derived from the even earlier Piasecki CH-21 Shawnee design. The CH-47 was commissioned by the U.S. Army in need of a tactical transport helicopter as excellent as the CH-46, but with a larger payload.

The commercial model of this helicopter is the Boeing 234 Chinook, and is used for transport, passenger aviation, forest firefighting, oil rig resupply, and similar operations.

The MH version is designed for special forces. It has in-flight refueling capability, a high-speed cable winch, and many other improvements.
Currently the MH-47E version is in use, and the next, modernized MH-47G is still under development.
