History and usage:
The 37 mm Bofors m/34 is a Swedish anti-tank gun that was constructed at the Bofors factory during the interwar period. Its design began in 1932, and development work was completed in 1934. The gun was primarily intended for export, and one of its largest recipients was Poland, which purchased a license for its production.
In Poland, the gun was adopted into service as the "37 mm wz. 36" and was produced at the SMPzA factories and the "H. Cegielski" Machine Factory in Rzeszów. A total of 968 units were produced in the towed version. By 1939, the Polish Army had over 1300 examples of this gun.
Combat use:
The Bofors wz. 36 was used by the Polish Army during the September campaign in 1939. Its small size and weight made it very mobile, which was particularly useful in cavalry operations. The gun was capable of penetrating armor up to 40 mm thick at a distance of 400 meters, making it effective against most German tanks of that period, such as the Panzer I, Panzer II, and Panzer III.
One of the most famous examples of its effectiveness was the stopping of a German armored division by the Volhynian Cavalry Brigade during the battle of Mokra. The gun was also used by other armies, including Finland during the Winter War against the USSR, where it successfully engaged Soviet tanks such as the T-26, T-28, and BT.
