This set depicts soldiers of the horse artillery of the Polish Army from the period of the Second Polish Republic, one of the key branches of the military at that time. Horse artillery was an essential element of the armed forces, and its formation began as early as 1919.

Historical background:

Artillery in the Second Polish Republic was one of the three main branches of the military, alongside infantry and cavalry. As of June 1, 1939, there were 2,589 officers, 4,974 professional and reserve non-commissioned officers, and 53,320 privates serving in the artillery, which constituted 13.8% of all soldiers in the Polish Army. In terms of numbers, artillery was the second branch of arms after infantry.

The formation of horse artillery divisions began in 1919, and by 1924, ten divisions had been formed. Each horse artillery division consisted of several batteries equipped with 75 mm caliber guns model 02/06. Horse artillery soldiers wore distinctive black cords on their caps.

In 1922, a commemorative badge for horse artillery was introduced, symbolizing three periods of existence of this formation: the Duchy of Warsaw, the Kingdom of Poland, and the reborn Poland. The badge took the form of a Maltese cross, with its central element being an eagle supported on two crossed gun barrels.
