History and significance of Pz.Kpfw. II: The Panzerkampfwagen II, commonly known as Panzer II, was one of the main tanks used by the German armed forces during World War II. Although initially designed as a temporary solution before more advanced tanks like the Panzer III and IV were ready for production, the Panzer II played an essential role in the campaigns in Poland and France. It was the most numerous tank in German armored divisions at the beginning of the war.

The Panzer II was used on both the western and eastern fronts, as well as in North Africa. Despite being replaced by more advanced models by 1940/1941, its chassis continued to be used for the construction of other armored vehicles, such as the self-propelled artillery Wespe and the tank destroyers Marder II.

The Panzer II Ausf. a1 was the first variant of this tank, produced in limited numbers. This version was divided into three sub-variants, which differed from each other by minor improvements, such as improved access to the engine or better cooling.
