History and use of PzKpfw II Ausf. F: The PzKpfw II, also known as Panzerkampfwagen II, was a German light tank that played a key role in the early years of World War II. Despite its weak armor and armament, which made it vulnerable to enemy tanks and artillery fire, it was invaluable in supporting infantry operations and reconnaissance missions.
The Ausf. F version, produced from late 1940, introduced a number of improvements, such as increased armor thickness and an improved turret rotation mechanism. By 1943, 524 units of this version had been produced. These tanks were used on many fronts, including North Africa, where they participated in battles as part of the Afrika Korps.
The PzKpfw II Ausf.F was part of the German Blitzkrieg strategy, which involved rapid and surprising attacks using mechanized armored units and close cooperation with aviation. Despite its limitations, these tanks contributed to the successes of the Wehrmacht in the early phases of the war.
Use in Africa: In North Africa, the PzKpfw II Ausf. F was used by units such as the 5th Light Division DAK, which received 45 tanks of this type in March 1941. These tanks were utilized in reconnaissance operations and as support for infantry, which was crucial in the challenging desert conditions.
