History of PZL W-3 Sokół: PZL W-3 Sokół is a multi-role helicopter designed and produced by the Polish company PZL Świdnik. Its production began in 1985, and to date, about 150 units have been produced in various versions. Sokół is used in many countries around the world, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Myanmar, Spain, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Russia.
Work on the helicopter began in the 1970s when Poland, in cooperation with the USSR, decided to create a new machine to replace the Mi-4. After many consultations and tests, the first prototype took to the air in 1982. Serial production began in 1987, and the helicopter quickly gained recognition for its versatility and reliability.
PZL W-3 Sokół was widely used by the Polish armed forces, including the 103 Air Regiment of the Vistula Military Units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This regiment, stationed at Warsaw-Bemowo airport, was one of the oldest aviation units in Poland. Sokół helicopters were used for various tasks, including transport, medical evacuation, fire support, and rescue missions.
Historical significance: The 103 Air Regiment played a key role in many operations, including during the pilgrimages of Pope John Paul II to Poland, where helicopters were used to transport the pope between cities. The regiment also performed tasks for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including police and rescue operations.
