History and use of Raupenschlepper OST: The Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO) was designed as a response to the difficult terrain conditions faced by German troops on the Eastern Front. After the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, German forces quickly realized that their existing vehicles were struggling with muddy roads and harsh climatic conditions. The RSO, developed by Steyr Daimler Puch AG, aimed to improve military mobility and logistics in these challenging conditions.
The RSO was equipped with tracks, allowing it to move through deep snow and mud, and its design was based on components from the Steyr 1500A truck, which facilitated production. Serial production began in September 1942, and by the end of the war, approximately 28,000 units were produced, including various versions and modifications.
The RSO was used for transporting artillery, ammunition, and supplies, as well as serving as an evacuation and transport vehicle. Its versatility and reliability made it an indispensable element of German military logistics on the Eastern Front.
