History and achievements of Sopwith Camel F.1:
Sopwith Camel F.1 is a single-engine, biplane fighter aircraft that was introduced into service on the Western Front in 1917. It was developed by Sopwith Aviation Company as a successor to the Sopwith Pup and quickly became one of the most recognizable fighters of the Great War. Pilots flying Camels shot down a total of 1,294 enemy aircraft, making it the most effective Allied fighter of this conflict.
The Camel was powered by a single rotary engine and armed with two synchronized Vickers machine guns in .303 caliber (7.70 mm). Although difficult to fly due to 90% of its weight concentrated in the front two meters of the structure, it was extremely maneuverable in the hands of an experienced pilot. This feature was crucial in the low-speed and low-altitude dogfights of that era.
The Sopwith Camel entered service in June 1917 with the 4th Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps, stationed near Dunkirk in France. By February 1918, 13 squadrons had Camels as their main equipment. The Camel demonstrated better maneuverability than the German Albatros D.III and D.V and offered better armament and performance than the Pup and Triplane. Along with the S.E.5a and SPAD S.XIII, it helped temporarily restore Allied air superiority.
