History and significance of the F-111A Aardvark: The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark is a retired supersonic, medium-range, multi-role combat aircraft. Its production began in the 1960s as part of the TFX program under the leadership of Robert McNamara. The F-111 was a pioneer in the use of variable geometry wings, afterburning turbofan engines, and automated radar for low-level high-speed flight. These innovations had a significant impact on later aircraft designs.
The F-111 entered service with the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1967 and was quickly deployed in combat operations, particularly during the Vietnam War. These aircraft conducted over 4,000 combat missions, suffering only six combat losses. The F-111 was also used during the Gulf War in 1991, where its effectiveness in strike missions was higher than any other American combat aircraft used in that operation.
Despite its effectiveness, the F-111 was costly to maintain, which, combined with budget cuts after the Cold War, led to its retirement from the USAF in the 1990s. The last F-111F was retired in 1996, and the remaining EF-111 in 1998. The role of the F-111 in the USAF was taken over by the F-15E Strike Eagle, and in Australia, where the F-111C served until 2010, it was replaced by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
