History and achievements: The F-4 Phantom II was developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy and entered service in 1961. Soon after, it was adopted by the Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, becoming one of the most important combat aircraft of the Cold War era. A total of 5,195 units of this model were produced, making it the most widely produced American supersonic aircraft in history.
The F-4 Phantom II was widely used during the Vietnam War, both as an air superiority fighter and as an attack and reconnaissance aircraft. During this war, all American pilots who became aces flew the F-4. This aircraft set 15 world records in flight performance, including speed and altitude records.
VMFA-333 Fighting Shamrocks: Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 333, known as "Fighting Shamrocks," was a unit of the U.S. Marine Corps that operated the F-4 Phantom II. They were known for the distinctive three shamrocks painted on the vertical stabilizers of their aircraft. The unit participated in combat operations during World War II, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm.
During the Vietnam War, VMFA-333 achieved its only air victory when Major Lee T. Lasseter and Captain John D. Cummings shot down a MiG-21 over North Vietnam. It was the only kill made by a completely naval crew during this war.
In the 1980s and 1990s, VMFA-333 was the last regular Marine Corps unit to operate the F-4 Phantom before transitioning to the F/A-18 Hornet. During Operation Desert Storm, the unit conducted over 700 combat missions without losses, dropping over two million pounds of ordnance on Iraqi forces.
