History and significance of the F/A-18 Hornet: The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is a versatile, supersonic, twin-engine combat aircraft capable of operations from aircraft carriers, designed for both air-to-air combat and ground attack. Its design originates from the YF-17, which lost to the YF-16 in the USAF lightweight fighter program. The United States Navy selected the YF-17 for the Navy Air Combat Fighter program, further developing the design and naming it the F/A-18. This aircraft was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and is used by the air forces of several other countries.

The F/A-18 Hornet was designed as a highly versatile aircraft due to its advanced avionics systems, cockpit displays, and excellent aerodynamic properties, allowing for maneuvers at high angles of attack. It can carry a wide range of armaments and perform various missions, such as fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses, interdiction, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance.

VMFA-232 "Red Devils" Squadron: The VMFA-232 squadron, known as the "Red Devils," is the oldest and most decorated fighter squadron in the U.S. Marine Corps. Its history dates back to 1925 when it was formed as VF-3M in San Diego. Over the years, the squadron has undergone many reorganizations and equipment changes, participating in numerous combat operations, including during World War II, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm.

In 2007, during operations in the Persian Gulf, the VMFA-232 squadron operated from the USS Nimitz, supporting operations under Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. In 2029, the squadron is scheduled to transition to modern F-35C Lightning II aircraft.
