History and significance of the M60: The M60 tank, although derived from the M48 Patton design, was never officially named a Patton tank. It was the main battle tank of the United States during the Cold War, with production reaching 15,000 units. The M60 was widely used by the U.S. armed forces and their NATO allies, as well as by many other countries around the world.
The first combat use of the M60 occurred during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, where these tanks, under the name "Magach 6," were used by Israel. M60 tanks also participated in the Lebanese War in 1982 and in Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983. The largest deployment of M60s by the United States occurred during the Gulf War in 1991, where these tanks effectively fought against Iraqi armored forces.
Development and upgrades: The M60 underwent many upgrades that extended its lifespan and increased its combat effectiveness. The M60A1 RISE (Reliability Improved Selected Equipment) Passive version, produced after 1977, was equipped with an upgraded M68E1 gun and improved stabilization and hydraulic systems. These tanks were also adapted for reactive armor installation, which increased their protection against guided missiles.
Historical significance: The M60 was the last American tank to have an escape hatch under the hull. Its design was flexible enough to allow for numerous modifications, making it a versatile tool on the battlefield. Although it has been replaced by the M1 Abrams tanks, the M60 still remains in service in many countries, and its legacy is visible in numerous museums and military exhibitions.
