History and significance of the B-25 Mitchell: The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American medium bomber introduced into service in 1941 and named after Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of American military aviation. The B-25 was used by many Allied air forces and participated in combat operations on all fronts of World War II. After the war, many of these aircraft remained in service for decades.

The B-25 Mitchell gained fame for its participation in the famous Doolittle Raid, where on April 18, 1942, 16 B-25B bombers, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, attacked Japan, marking the first such attack on Japanese territory after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This mission had immense moral significance for the United States and forced Japan to allocate additional forces to defend its territory.

Flight characteristics and durability: The B-25 was known for its safe and forgiving flight characteristics. It could perform turns at a 60° angle even with one engine shut down, and control was possible at speeds of 145 mph (230 km/h). The tricycle landing gear provided excellent visibility during taxiing. The only serious drawback was the very loud engines, which led to hearing loss in many pilots.

The Mitchell was also exceptionally durable and could withstand significant combat damage. An example is the B-25C named "Patches," which completed over 300 missions, made emergency landings six times, and had over 400 patched holes.

Combat operations: The B-25 was widely used in combat against Japan in Asia and the Pacific, where its potential as an attack aircraft was fully utilized. In Europe, the RAF used Mitchells to bomb targets in occupied Europe, and after the Normandy invasion, it supported Allied operations on the continent.

U.S. Navy and USMC: Under the designation PBJ-1, the Mitchell was used by the United States Marine Corps as a patrol bomber. PBJ-1 operations began in March 1944, with their primary mission being long-range interdiction of Japanese maritime transport.
