McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II
The F-4 Phantom II is an American, two-seat, twin-engine interceptor and bomber, capable of operating in all weather conditions. It was developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy and entered service in 1961. Soon after, it was adopted by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force, becoming a key element of their air forces.
The F-4 Phantom II was widely used during the Vietnam War as the primary air superiority fighter for the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. Later, it served as an attack and reconnaissance aircraft. During the Vietnam War, all five American air aces earned their titles flying the F-4. This aircraft remained a key element of American air power until the 1980s, when it was gradually replaced by more modern machines such as the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-14 Tomcat, and F/A-18 Hornet.
The F-4 Phantom II also participated in reconnaissance missions and Wild Weasel (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) during the Gulf War in 1991, ultimately ending its combat service in 1996. It was the only aircraft used by both American aerobatic teams: the Thunderbirds (F-4E) and the Blue Angels (F-4J).
The F-4 Phantom II was also used by the armed forces of 11 other countries. Israeli Phantoms participated in numerous Arab-Israeli conflicts, and Iran utilized its large fleet of Phantoms during the Iran-Iraq War. This aircraft remains in active service in the Air Forces of Greece, Turkey, and Iran.
