History of USS South Dakota (BB-57):
USS South Dakota was the first of four battleships of the South Dakota class, built for the United States Navy in the 1930s. They were the first American battleships designed after the collapse of the Washington Naval Treaty system, which allowed for an increase in the main battery caliber to 16-inch guns (406 mm). Nevertheless, congressional restrictions on displacement meant that these ships were relatively cramped, a situation further exacerbated by wartime modifications that increased their anti-aircraft armament.
Participation in military operations:
- Guadalcanal: After entering service in 1942, USS South Dakota was sent to the South Pacific to support Allied forces in the Guadalcanal campaign. The ship was damaged after accidentally grounding, but after repairs, it returned to combat, participating in the Battle of Santa Cruz and the second naval battle of Guadalcanal.
- Convoy protection: After repairs in the USA, the battleship was briefly assigned to the British Home Fleet, where it protected convoys heading to the Soviet Union.
- Pacific campaigns: In 1943, it returned to the Pacific, where it operated with fast carrier groups, participating in campaigns in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, the Marianas and Palau, and the Philippines.
- Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa: In 1945, it participated in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and bombarded Japan three times.
