The third generation Golf (Mk3) debuted in the domestic market in August 1991 and again grew slightly compared to its direct predecessor, while the wheelbase remained unchanged.

New engines included the first turbocharged Direct Injection (TD) diesel engine in the Golf and a 2.8-liter VR6 engine. The estimated fuel consumption by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is 9.0 L/100 km (city) and 7.4 L/100 km (highway), with a range of 420 km on a tank (city) and 584 km on a tank (highway). For the first time in history, the Golf estate (Golf Variant) joined the lineup in September 1993 (although most markets received this model only in early 1994). At the same time, a completely new Cabriolet derived from the Mk3 was introduced, replacing the 13-year-old version based on the Mk1 with a version based on the Golf Mk3 platform from 1995 to early 1999. The Mk3 Golf Cabrio received a facelift in the Mk4 style at the end of 1999 and continued until 2002.

The notchback version, named VW Vento (or Jetta in North America), was unveiled in January 1992.

It was the European Car of the Year 1992, ahead of the new Citroën ZX and the new Opel Astra model from General Motors.

The Mk3 continued to be sold until 1999 in the United States, Canada, and parts of South America, also in Mexico as a special edition called "Mi" (essentially a Golf CL 4-door with added air conditioning, special interior, original equipment (OEM) blacked-out rear brake lights, and ABS brakes, but without a factory radio). The letter "i" in "Mi" is tinted red, indicating that it was equipped with multi-point fuel injection, and the 1.8-liter engine was upgraded to 2.0 liters. Heated seats were offered in all trim levels.
