History and technical background: The T-10M tank, also known as Object 730 or IS-8, was the last development of the series of heavy IS tanks produced by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Its production began in the 1950s, and this tank was a modernization of earlier models such as the IS-3. The T-10M was distinguished by a longer hull, seven pairs of road wheels, a larger turret with a new gun equipped with a gas extractor, an improved diesel engine, and increased armor.
The tank was armed with a 122 mm M-62-T2 (2A17) gun and a 14.5 mm KPVT machine gun. It was also equipped with a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection system and night vision equipment. The T-10M was used, among others, during Operation "Danube" during the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 and remained in service until 1993.
Historical significance: The T-10M was the last heavy tank of the IS series to enter service in the Soviet Army. Its production ended in 1966, and in the 1960s, heavy tanks began to be replaced by more mobile medium tanks, such as the T-64, which offered better performance and modern technologies. The introduction of the main battle tank (MBT) concept and the development of anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) contributed to the decline of the era of heavy tanks like the T-10M.
